EOS 40D Review
The fine people of Canon have done it again with their release of the EOS 40D, a digital single lens reflex, or DSLR, camera that shoots gorgeous 10.1 megapixel images onto its high resolution sensor. The EOS 40D utilizes Canon’s DIGIC III image processor, the same kind now used in their high end professional 1D Mark series. You will be astonished with the speed in control responses, focusing and camera start-up time.
The larger sensor and improved image processing allows for fast and continuous shooting of up to 6 fps, or frames per second, with a rewarding burst rate of up to 75 jpegs or 17 RAWS. Oh yes, the EOS 40D shoots RAW too. Also a new feature included is the ability to shoot sRAW, which is just a reduced resolution RAW file but yet not a jpeg.
With the growing popularity of night time photography, be impressed with the 40d’s low light capability with ISO ranges of up to 3200. Equally impressive is the 40D’s body construction of strong magnesium alloy. No more plastic casings and lack of protection of the elements either. The EOS 40D feels strong and sturdy and has weather sealings at the seams, joints, and memory card doors to help protect from a variety of weather conditions, although it is not a water proof camera, so don’t take it on your next dive.
An extra step Canon has taken with it’s EOS 40D along with its improved weather sealing, is the inclusion of Canon’s Integrated Cleaning System. Dust is a fact of life and can many times intrude the inner workings of any camera, especially when changing lenses. The sensor inside the EOS 40D has a filter that shakes off any dust it may have during camera start-up and shut down.
Large LCD screens seem like almost the norm in today’s, and the EOS 40D delivers with authority. You will adore its bright and crisp 3.0′” LCD screen that will playback your work in vibrant colors. The 40D’s LCD does more than just display pictures, it also has the much demanded feature in DSLRs of a Live View, or real time view. Compose your pictures through the LCD screen now instead of only the viewfinder. Low and off angled shots will be shot with much more ease using the Live View. Also use the Live View to view many of the 40D’s settings.
Weighing in at just under 2 lbs (body only), the EOS 40D still feels like a solid piece of machinery, and with the addition of rubber grips completing its smooth ergonomic feel, the EOS 40D is a comfortable piece of heaven.
Focusing is a cinch, both sharp and fast. The new AF, or auto focus, system utilizes 9 cross type sensors that aide the 40D’s ability to focus more accurately in a variety of lighting conditions. Have the EOS 40D automatically choose the focus point or select it yourself using the multi controller, a thumb-controlled mini joystick that is also used in some of the 40D’s menu navigation.
One way handy feature of the EOS 40D is the 3 customizable presets that the user may set. A feature like this is extremely useful when shooting in studio with similar subjects and lighting conditions. Never again wander through your settings trying to figure out how you shot that particular image. The Canon EOS 40D will remember.
